What Is Smart Bidding in Google Ads

Smart Bidding is Google's family of automated bid strategies. It uses machine learning to set a bid for every single auction, aiming at conversions or conversion value. Google calls this auction time bidding.

In practice, you stop setting one bid for a keyword all day. Instead, you tell Google what you want, and the system prices each search on its own.

The Four Smart Bidding Strategies

Google lists four strategies under this umbrella:

  • Target CPA: keeps your average cost per conversion near a target.
  • Target ROAS: aims for the return on ad spend you set.
  • Maximize conversions: gets the most conversions for your budget.
  • Maximize conversion value: gets the most value for your budget.

Google maps the first and third to more sales or leads. It maps the second and fourth to profit and value.

Signals Google Reads at Auction Time

Each bid reflects many signals at once. These include device, location, weekday, time of day, and remarketing lists. They also include ad characteristics, browser, operating system, and, on Search and Shopping, the actual search query.

A person cannot weigh all of that in milliseconds but a machine.

Smart Bidding vs Manual Bidding: Key Differences

Both approaches can work. They just ask for different kinds of effort from you.

Smart bidding vs manual bidding comparison table

Manual bidding still has a place. It suits tests where you need full control, or accounts without conversion tracking.

  • Choose automation when you track conversions reliably and want bids priced per auction.
  • Choose manual when you are testing, need strict cost caps, or have no conversion data yet.

But adjusting bids by hand at 3 a.m. is dedication, not strategy. It is also how people end up with strong opinions about coffee.

For most accounts with solid tracking, automation does the pricing better and faster. You know, the real question is what happens around the bid.

Google Ads Smart Bidding Changes in 2026

Two updates matter this year. Both come from Google's own announcements.

  1. June 2026: Google relabeled two strategies. "Maximize conversions with a Target CPA" became Target CPA. "Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS" became Target ROAS. Google called it a purely visual change.
  2. 17 August 2026: budget-limited campaigns on Target CPA or Target ROAS now bid closer to your target. This covers Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and Demand Gen.

Google also released a Bid Target Adjustment Tool on 6 July 2026. It helps you review targets before the change landed. Google does not change your targets or budgets for you.

A Story About a Hero Campaign

Picture a campaign with a $10 Target CPA that recently averaged $5. It looks like a hero. In fact, in reality, it was entering only the cheapest auctions. Since 17 August, that campaign has moved toward $10 with:

  • Same budget
  • higher cost per conversion,
  • fewer conversions.

The hero was just picking easy fights, and now it has to sit the harder exams.

The lesson is simple. Review your targets. Strong results on a limited budget may reflect narrow auction participation, not pure efficiency.

Where Smart Bidding Stops and AI Takes Over

Automated bidding optimizes bids inside a campaign. That is a valuable job, but it is a narrow one. Even a perfect bid cannot rescue a weak audience, a wasted budget, or a slow landing page.

Actually, it does not:

  • Choose which audience deserves more budget across channels
  • Compare Google Ads against Meta, LinkedIn, or TikTok
  • Flag a weak creative before it burns budget
  • Explain why revenue moved this week
  • Fix a slow or confusing landing page

Those are cross channel marketing questions. Answering them means reading data from every platform at once, then acting on it. That is where AI marketing intelligence comes in. Read our guide to cross channel marketing for the full picture.
